Air & turbo

Turbo wastegate

Diverts exhaust around the turbine to help control boost.

Drag to turn it Open in the 3D lab
Where it sits

On or beside the turbo turbine housing.

How it works

A controlled flap routes some gas around the turbine; actuator type depends on the turbo system.

Think of it as

A bypass lane controlling how hard a windmill is driven.

Symptoms when it fails

Boost-control faults or rattling can involve linkage, actuator, sensors or leaks.

Lifespan

Filters follow the vehicle service schedule; ducts and boost hardware are inspected for condition, sealing and operation.

Repair cost

A hose or filter is generally simpler to service than a turbo assembly. Access and diagnosis can dominate cost.

The BMW angle

A wastegate and an intake-side diverter valve perform different jobs on a turbo BMW.

Used in

BMW combustion models; boost hardware applies to turbocharged engines only.
