Inline-six engine
Complete B58-style engine: crank, rods, pistons, twin cams, 24 valves, timing chain and turbo, all in step. Holds the cylinders and supports the engine’s rotating parts.
Twin-turbo V8
Cross-plane crank with two banks at 90° and turbos inside the hot V, like the S63. Names a BMW engine-technology package whose hardware varies by engine.
Crankshaft
Inline-six, seven main bearings, throws 120° apart. Turns the pistons’ back-and-forth motion into rotation.
Camshaft
Twelve lobes push buckets, springs and valves in firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4. Times the opening and closing of engine valves.
Piston and rod
Three rings, a floating wrist pin and an I-beam rod on a counterweighted crank. Receives combustion force and moves up and down inside a cylinder.
Timing chain
Roller chain, guide rails and a hydraulic tensioner; cam sprockets turn at half crank speed. Keeps crankshaft and camshaft movement synchronized.
Valvetronic
An eccentric shaft changes valve lift continuously, so the engine needs no throttle plate. Varies how far the intake valves open to control airflow.
Turbocharger
Exhaust spins the turbine; one shaft drives the compressor wheel. Uses exhaust energy to push more air into the engine.
Fuel injector
A solenoid lifts the needle and six jets of fuel spray straight into the cylinder. Meters fuel into the intake or combustion chamber.
Spark plug
Ribbed ceramic insulator, hex, copper washer, thread and ground electrode. Starts combustion with an electrical spark.
Oil pump
A gerotor: the inner rotor has one lobe fewer than the outer one, so the chambers pump. Circulates lubricating oil to loaded moving parts.
Water pump
Curved impeller vanes fling coolant out into a spiral volute. Circulates coolant through a thermal-management circuit.
Engine block
Open-deck inline-six with head-bolt bosses, coolant jackets and live pistons. Holds the cylinders and supports the engine’s rotating parts.
Six-speed manual
Watch it shift through all six gears: synchro sleeves slide, the countershaft never stops. Lets the driver choose gear ratios between engine and wheels.
Planetary gear set
Sun, planets and ring: hold a different member and you get reduction, reverse or overdrive. Provides automatic shifts with driver-selectable gear commands on equipped cars.
Differential
Ring and pinion turn the drive 90°; spider gears let the outer wheel run faster in a corner. Lets driven wheels turn at different speeds in a corner.
Clutch and flywheel
Dual-mass flywheel, clutch disc, pressure plate and diaphragm spring, engaging and releasing. Connects engine torque to a manual transmission through friction.
Wheel, tyre and brake
Directional tread, five double spokes and a cross-drilled disc under the caliper. Provides the car’s contact and grip with the road.
M Sport brake
Six-piston fixed caliper on a two-piece vented disc that glows as it heats up. Squeezes the brake pads against the disc.
Front suspension
MacPherson strut: spring, damper, knuckle, control arm and anti-roll bar moving over bumps. Controls how quickly suspension motion settles.
Steering
Rack and pinion with electric assist: turn the wheel and the tie rods steer the knuckles. Turns steering input into side-to-side movement at the front wheels.
Electric motor
BMW eDrive: a rotor with copper field coils chases the rotating field in the stator. Turns electrical energy into driving rotation.
Battery module
Prismatic cells, copper busbars, a cooling plate and the monitoring board. Organizes cells into a defined battery assembly where the architecture uses modules.
