Why you’d want one
- A rapid all-weather performance saloon.
Know before you buy
- Hot-vee turbo heat ages hoses, seals and coil packs
- Oil consumption should be checked on early engines
- High brake and tyre running costs

An M5 with two driven axles.
The F90 brings M xDrive to the M5 story. A twin-turbo V8 and an all-wheel-drive system turn the familiar four-door shape into a very different proposition from the rear-drive F10.
A rapid all-weather performance saloon.
Size, tyres and running costs deserve attention.
M xDrive is part of this M5’s identity, rather than a different engine family.
S63 · V8
A 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 paired with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive.

Torque across the rev range.
BMW rates the 2018 US M5 at 600 hp and 553 lb-ft. M xDrive sends that torque through a configurable all-wheel-drive system. These figures do not describe every F90 special edition.
Two twin-scroll turbochargers.
The F90 V8 uses two turbochargers. Each has twin-scroll exhaust passages. The hot-V arrangement places the turbo hardware between the cylinder banks; covers and plumbing obscure much of it.
High-pressure direct injection.
Fuel is injected directly into the combustion chambers. BMW’s launch information describes a maximum injection pressure of 350 bar for this revision.
Airflow brings heat with it.
Compression and sustained engine load generate heat. Charge-air and engine cooling control different temperatures. The engine photograph shows only part of those systems.
