Manifold-pressure sensor

Measures air pressure in the intake system.

Where it sits

In the intake manifold or charge-air tract, depending on design.

How it works

Its electrical signal represents pressure; temperature sensing may share the same housing.

Think of it as

A pressure gauge reporting to the engine’s computer.

Symptoms when it fails

Implausible boost or load readings can arise from the sensor, connector or an actual air leak.

Lifespan

Filters follow the vehicle service schedule; ducts and boost hardware are inspected for condition, sealing and operation.

Repair cost

A hose or filter is generally simpler to service than a turbo assembly. Access and diagnosis can dominate cost.

The BMW angle

Similar-looking BMW pressure sensors can have different measurement ranges and pin assignments.

Used in

BMW combustion models; boost hardware applies to turbocharged engines only.
