The E39 M5 combines a naturally aspirated S62 V8 with the shape of a 5 Series saloon. It connects the six-cylinder early M5 story to the more unusual V10 chapter that followed.

A 4,941 cm³ naturally aspirated V8 with individual throttle butterflies and Double VANOS.

Eight cylinders. No turbocharger.
The S62 has two banks of four cylinders. Combustion drives the pistons and connecting rods, turning a shared crankshaft.
Individual throttles.
The S62 uses individual throttle butterflies to control airflow into its eight cylinders.
Variable camshaft timing.
Double VANOS varies intake and exhaust camshaft timing. It changes when the valves open, rather than adding boost.
