Suspension

Suspension air compressor

Supplies compressed air for a self-leveling suspension.

Where it sits

In a protected body or underbody mounting location.

How it works

A compressor, air treatment and valve system supply the suspension reservoirs or springs.

Think of it as

A small pump refilling adjustable air cushions.

Symptoms when it fails

Long run time, slow leveling or a warning may originate from leaks rather than the compressor.

Lifespan

Wear is condition-based and strongly affected by roads, loads, impacts and seals. There is no universal replacement mileage.

Repair cost

Links and bushings are smaller repairs than complete adaptive struts or air-spring systems; alignment may be needed after work.

The BMW angle

A BMW air-suspension compressor and the air-conditioning compressor perform unrelated jobs.

Used in

BMW passenger cars and SAVs; spring, damper and axle design depend on chassis and options.
