BMW M3 (E46) buying guide
The S54 engine and the rear of the body decide whether an E46 M3 is a good buy. Ask for proof of connecting-rod bearing work, inspect the trunk floor and rear subframe mounts for cracks, and check the rear wheel arches for rust. Prefer documented history over low mileage.
Engines, gearboxes and bodies
- Engine
- S54: 3,246 cc naturally aspirated inline-six with individual throttle bodies and double VANOS. 343 PS and 365 Nm in European specification; US cars are rated at 333 hp. The CSL version makes 360 PS and 370 Nm.
- Gearboxes
- 6-speed manual or 6-speed SMG II, an automated manual with no clutch pedal. The CSL was sold only with SMG.
- Bodies
- Coupé and convertible, plus the lightweight CSL coupé built in 2003–2004.
Inspection checklist
Engine and records
- Connecting-rod bearing history
What to look for: An invoice naming the bearing replacement, its date and mileage. Cars built 2001–2003 were subject to a BMW service action for the bearings; a BMW dealer can confirm by VIN whether it was carried out.
- Cold start and idle
What to look for: Start the engine cold. Listen for knocking from the bottom end and for a rattle from the VANOS at the front of the engine. The idle should settle without hunting.
- Power to the redline
What to look for: Only once fully warm: power should build smoothly to the redline with no stutter at low rpm.
Known faults
No repair costs are given because the sources do not state reliable current prices. Get local quotes and an independent inspection.
Connecting-rod bearing wear
Severity: High- Affects
- S54 · All years; BMW service action for 2001–2003 production
- Symptoms
- Knocking from the bottom end, low oil pressure warning, metal particles in the oil. Failure can destroy the engine.
Cracks at the rear subframe mounts and trunk floor
Severity: High- Affects
- All years, including low-mileage cars
- Symptoms
- Clunks from the rear when accelerating or lifting off; visible cracks around the mounting points. Untreated damage makes the car unsafe and is expensive to repair; minor damage can be fixed with a reinforcement kit.
