Fuel & ignition

Fuel tank

Stores the fuel carried by a combustion car.

Where it sits

Under the rear body or passenger-floor area; layout varies.

How it works

Venting, pump modules and level sensing manage storage and delivery without treating the tank as a sealed can.

Think of it as

A protected reservoir feeding a small factory.

Symptoms when it fails

Fuel odor, leakage or inaccurate level readings need a careful inspection.

Lifespan

Plugs and filters use engine-specific service guidance. Pumps and injectors are normally assessed through pressure, leakage and electrical tests.

Repair cost

Spark-plug service is usually less involved than direct-injector or high-pressure-pump replacement; coding and access can add work.

The BMW angle

BMW plug-in hybrids have both a fuel tank and a traction battery, packaged for the specific chassis.

Used in

BMW combustion models; spark components are petrol-only and glow-plug hardware is diesel-only.
