Exhaust & emissions

Turbo downpipe

Carries gas from the turbo toward exhaust treatment.

Where it sits

Immediately downstream of a turbocharger.

How it works

Its pipe and attached treatment hardware route exhaust under thermal movement and vibration.

Think of it as

The exit corridor after the turbine.

Symptoms when it fails

Leaks can create odor, noise or sensor faults; a restriction can affect boost and temperature.

Lifespan

Condition, contamination, operating pattern and the underlying engine matter more than a universal age limit.

Repair cost

Sensors and joints differ greatly from complete after-treatment assemblies. First repair the cause of contamination or abnormal combustion.

The BMW angle

A BMW downpipe can include emissions hardware; it is not the same as an intake charge pipe.

Used in

BMW combustion models; petrol and diesel after-treatment components differ by engine and market.
