Camshaft position sensor

Reports camshaft position so timing can be checked and adjusted.

Drag to turn it Open in the 3D lab
Where it sits

At the cylinder head near the camshaft trigger wheels.

How it works

Its signal identifies the cylinder cycle and lets VANOS control measure actual cam timing.

Think of it as

A second clock that confirms which stroke the engine is on.

Symptoms when it fails

Timing correlation faults or rough running can involve sensors, wiring, oil supply or the timing drive.

Lifespan

Usually condition-based rather than a routine replacement. Lubrication, overheating and the exact engine affect wear.

Repair cost

Internal-engine work is usually labor-intensive. Diagnosis and the engine code determine the repair scope.

The BMW angle

Each VANOS-equipped camshaft on a BMW engine typically has its own sensor.

Used in

BMW petrol and diesel engines; petrol-only systems are identified individually.
