The 740i combines the B58 straight-six with the 7 Series saloon. Beside the older V12 750iL and electric i7, it shows three very different approaches to a BMW flagship.

The sixth-generation 740i uses a 2,998 cm³ turbocharged straight-six. The new engine family combines a twin-scroll turbocharger, direct injection, Valvetronic and Double VANOS.

One turbocharger
One exhaust-driven turbocharger compresses the intake air. Charge-air cooling then reduces the temperature before the air reaches the cylinders.
Rear-wheel drive
An eight-speed Steptronic transmission delivers drive to the rear wheels. The G11 is the standard-wheelbase body; the contemporary long-wheelbase 740Li carries the G12 code.
